May 30, 1943 – German submarine U-126 torpedoes U.S. freighter Flora McDonald off the west coast of Africa, 07°20’N, 13°15’W; escorting trawler HMS Fandango rescues Flora McDonald’s survivors and proceeds to Freetown, Sierra Leone. British tug HMS Zwarte Zee, escorted by British sloop HMS Milford and corvettes HMS Woodruff and HMS Tamarisk, proceed to the blazing freighter’s assistance.
