December 12, 1950 – Lt. Gen. Walton H. Walker, Eighth U.S. Army commander, promises Republic of Korea President Syngman Rhee that Seoul will be defended. An Eighth Army defensive line has been established north of Seoul, just below the 38th Parallel. The city has been under martial law since Dec. 7. Most 8th Army and ROK troops are now south of the 38th Parallel.
